I don’t know how many people actually follow my blog or even stumble upon what I write here, but if you do follow, I want to say thank you and sorry for not posting anything the past 2 days. I was at the end of my existing job and had to move all my stuff to a different part of the country. I felt so tired after it all that I could not raise myself to write anything. So, what did I miss?

As usual, Andrey Arshavin says one too many things for my liking. It is one thing to state your opinion, it is quite another to say that first-timers, Sp*rs are actually one of the contenders for the Champions League. That is by far the most ludicrous thing I’ve ever heard. With the draw the got yesterday, they might not even get out of the group stage now. More on the Arsenal’s own draw later.

Our diminutive Russian also went on to say that Roberto Mancini will actually turn Manchester City into a trophy winning side by spending big. He compared that to the time when Zenit St Petersburg also splash their cash to win the Russian League. Now, without being discriminating towards that particular league, I’m sure that the Premier League is not all about the money. Chelsea did not win their first title immediately after spending big. Neither will Manchester City, but I will be wary of the way they have started.

Moving away from Arshavin’s thoughts, apparently we have signed someone. Arsenal finally announced the signing of Sebastien Squillaci from Sevilla for a figure quoted at £6 million. He’s 30 years of age and we’ve signed him for a significant number of years. Perhaps not the most anticipated signing ever but he does match what we’ve been looking for. A central defender who has spent years in the French and Spanish leagues. An international with France who has also played in the Champions League final before. I have no doubt that he will bring him, his wealth of experience and I wish Sebastien the best of luck.

Though, Arsene Wenger has already said that the newly signed Frenchman will not feature in the weekend’s game against Blackburn. With Laurent Koscielny returning from suspension and Johan Djourou ready to at least sit on the bench, I don’t think we need Squillaci for this game anyways. Like I’ve said before, Squillaci will now battle with Koscielny and Djourou for the right to partner Thomas Vermaelen. Wenger will need to establish his first choice pairing and whoever the other 2 turns out to be, they will have to understand that we cannot be changing the centreback pairing every other match.

Finally, we get to the Champions League draw for the group games. Arsenal was drawn in Group H that comprise of Sporting Braga, Partizan Belgrade and last but not least Shakhtar Donetsk. What we conclude almost immediately from that would be that we can formally say thank you and goodbye to a player loved by every Arsenal fan. Eduardo has been a promising player before the thuggery of English players robbed him of a successful career in England. He never really recovered from that psychologically and has only just moved to Ukraine in the summer.

While it would an emotional trip for Eduardo back at the Grove, this should otherwise very straight forward group for Arsenal. Braga and first timers just like our neighbours and this step up might just be little too high for them. We should also take 6 points from our meetings with Belgrade. Regardless of what happens with Shahktar, 12 points should see us through to the knock-out stage. At least Robert Pires won’t be the only player who gets his farewell after leaving the club.

Blackburn preview tomorrow. Thanks for reading.
